Malé Svatoňovice
A little town in the foothills of the Jestřebí Mountains has a rich cultural and sports tradition. The writer and journalist Karel Čapek was born here; the Museum of the Čapek Brothers has been established in his native house, including a gallery of Josef Čapek’s paintings (20 original oil paintings and prints from the 1920’s). The town square is dominated by a Baroque church devoted to the “Seven Joys of the Virgin Mary“, which is, together with a well and the “Mariánský sad” forest park, a renowned pilgrimage place.
The town history is closely connected with mining – a museum in the nearby town of Rtyně v Podkrkonoší reminds us about 400 years of coal mining.
Surroundings:
Jestřebí Mountains – educational trails around mining monuments, tourism possibilities (hiking, bicycling and cross-country skiing trails), a view-tower at Žaltman; Rtyně v Podkrkonoší – Town Museum, annual brass music festival – Koletova Rtyně.
